Things I Know To Be True: A Powerful Story of Family, Identity and Acceptance!

This June, as we mark Pride Month, Abingdon Drama Club is proud to bring Andrew Bovell’s acclaimed contemporary drama, Things I Know To Be True, to the stage.

Widely regarded as one of the most moving and insightful plays of recent years, Things I Know To Be True is a deeply human story about family, identity, love, and acceptance. Tender, humorous, and at times heartbreaking, the play follows Bob and Fran Price, devoted parents who have spent their lives raising their four children. As those children navigate adulthood and begin to shape lives of their own, the family must confront changing expectations, hidden truths, and the challenges that come with loving one another through times of change.

Told through the perspectives of the four adult siblings, the play explores the struggle to define ourselves beyond the expectations placed upon us by those closest to us. Bovell’s writing is both poetic and brutally honest, capturing the beauty, complexity, and fragility of everyday family life with remarkable insight.

As part of Pride Month, we are particularly proud to present a play that thoughtfully explores themes of gender identity and the experience of coming out as transgender within a family setting. Rather than relying on stereotypes or sensationalism, Things I Know To Be True approaches these themes with compassion, honesty, and emotional depth. It invites audiences to reflect on what it means to live authentically and how families can navigate change with empathy and understanding.

At its heart, this is a story about unconditional love. It asks difficult questions about acceptance, identity, and belonging, while reminding us that even when understanding does not come easily, love can endure.

By staging this production during Pride Month, Abingdon Drama Club hopes to celebrate stories that reflect the diversity and complexity of modern life, while creating opportunities for meaningful conversation, reflection, and connection within our community.

Internationally celebrated for its richly drawn characters and emotionally resonant storytelling, Things I Know To Be True remains one of contemporary theatre’s most compelling examinations of family relationships. We are excited to share this extraordinary play with our audiences and look forward to welcoming you to what promises to be a powerful, thought-provoking, and unforgettable production.
